Biography

Branislav Nušić was a Serbian playwright, novelist and humorist, the greatest Serbian writer of comedies. Born in Belgrade in 1864, he grew up in Smederevo and studied law in Graz and Belgrade. In 1887 a satirical poem about King Milan earned him a two-year prison sentence, part of which he served in Požarevac. He then spent many years in the diplomatic service, as a consul in Priština, Bitola and elsewhere, and later ran theatres in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Skopje and Sarajevo.

In comedies such as A Member of Parliament, The Suspicious Person, The Cabinet Minister’s Wife, The Bereaved Family and The Deceased he laughed at the vanity, careerism and small-mindedness of Serbian society, and they are still among the most performed plays in the region. In his humorous Autobiography of 1924 he told his life from his birth to his marriage. He became a member of the Serbian Royal Academy in 1933 and died in Belgrade in 1938.
