Biography
Radoje Domanović was a Serbian writer and the greatest of Serbian satirists. Born in 1873 in the village of Ovsište, near Topola, he studied history and philology at the Great School in Belgrade and worked as a secondary-school teacher in Pirot, Vranje and Leskovac. Because of his opposition to the autocratic rule of the Obrenović dynasty he was dismissed from his post, and from then on he lived by his pen in Belgrade.
In short allegorical satires such as Danga, The Leader, Prince Marko among the Serbs for the Second Time and Stradija, he mocked servility, hypocrisy and blind obedience to authority, describing an imaginary country in which everything is the opposite of what it claims to be. After the change of dynasty in 1903 he founded the satirical paper Stradija. He died of tuberculosis in Belgrade in 1908, at the age of thirty-five.
