Biography
Winston Churchill was a British statesman, soldier and writer, prime minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Born at Blenheim Palace into an aristocratic family, he served as a cavalry officer and war correspondent in India, the Sudan and South Africa, where he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp. He entered Parliament in 1900 and held many offices, among them First Lord of the Admiralty in the First World War. In the 1930s, out of office, he warned again and again of the danger of Nazi Germany.
He became prime minister in May 1940, as Germany overran Western Europe, and his speeches rallied the British people when they stood alone. Together with Roosevelt and Stalin he led the alliance that won the war in 1945. He was prime minister again from 1951 to 1955, and in 1953 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his historical writings and his speeches. When he died in 1965 he was given a state funeral.
