About

The Bible is the collection of the sacred books of Judaism and Christianity, written by many hands over more than a thousand years. The Hebrew Bible, which Christians call the Old Testament, was written mostly in Hebrew, with a few parts in Aramaic, and holds the books of the law, the histories, the prophets, the psalms and the books of wisdom. Christians added to it the New Testament, written in Greek in the first century: the four Gospels of the life of Jesus, the Acts of the Apostles, the letters of Paul and other apostles, and the Book of Revelation.

Around the year 400 Saint Jerome translated it into Latin, and his version, the Vulgate, was the Bible of the Western Church for more than a thousand years; through it many of its sentences entered Latin, and then the languages of Europe, as sayings. The words God speaks to Adam in Genesis, Dust you are, and to dust you shall return, are still said on Ash Wednesday, when ashes are placed on the faithful. The Bible was the first great book printed in Europe with movable type, by Gutenberg in the 1450s, and it is the most translated book in the world.
